When Jimmy Kimmel steps away from the comedy and late-night lights, he's just like any other dad facing family challenges. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the talk show host, 56, shared a hopeful update about his youngest child, Billy, who has been bravely battling heart issues since birth.

Speaking with ET's Kevin Frazier on the set of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Kimmel said his 7-year-old son is "doing great." The TV personality explained: "He had open-heart surgery; you know he's got the scars and everything, but he's just mentally right back where he was, which is crazy."

Kimmel went on to say, "They're made of rubber, you know, everybody says that kids are so resilient and the doctors actually explained it to me which I don't know why it never occurred to me before because they're still growing."

The conversation wasn't all medical updates. The dad of four cracked a joke about his parenting amidst his busy schedule, saying, "Yeah, you know what I do, I just cut out all the family time, I ignore my children." He quickly circled back with a laugh, clarifying the reality of his hectic lifestyle, "Yeah, no, the truth of the matter is even though it's a whole season of shows, we shoot it in a weekend so it's not that big of a deal, I miss the weekend."

On Monday, May 27, Kimmel shared a photo of Billy post-surgery, smiling big in his hospital bed. Appreciating his son's medical team at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, the comedian wrote, "Thanks to those loving strangers who took time to pray for and send positive energy to our baby, thanks to our family and friends for rallying around us to an almost-ridiculous extent, thank you to my wife Molly for being stronger than is reasonable for any Mom to be and Billy, you are the toughest (and funniest) 7 year-old we know," he continued. "There are so many parents and children who aren't fortunate enough to go home after five days."

Kimmel concluded his post by encouraging fans to send love and support, adding, "if it moves you, support @ChildrensLA (link in bio) or a great children's hospital near you (@CMNHospitals). Nothing matters more than taking care of each other."
