Shailene Woodley has come under fire for sharing Melania Trump's statement following the assassination attempt on the latter's husband, former President Donald Trump.

Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday when a sniper took aim at the former president. A bullet hit the upper part of his right ear and one rally attendee died. The 20-year-old shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by security shortly after.

Melania Trump broke her silence after the incident with a two-page statement where she described Crooks as "a monster who recognized my husband as an inhumane political machine."

Woodley, who is best known for her roles in the Divergent film series and HBO's Big Little Lies, reshared a screenshot of the statement to her Instagram stories without comment.

It was then picked up by the X, formerly Twitter, account Pop Crave, which showed Woodley's Instagram posts side-by-side with a photo of the actress.

"Shailene Woodley reposts Melania Trump's statement on her husband's assassination attempt," it captioned the post.

People shared their thoughts on her post in the replies.

"Good for her, she doesn't even have to be for him to have empathy for the situation. People are so weird these days. If you don't like someone it's like you can't even express you're happy they didn't die. 🥴🤷🏼‍♀️" wrote @mollyvegas.

"how tf you gonna star in a dystopian film and then still end up being a MAGA?" commented @bigarms4me.

While @feralmeemaw replied: "I mean the flop to MAGA pipeline is getting popular. How many youtube beauty girls went full MAGA during a controversy? i'm assuming the money's there."

Newsweek contacted Woodley's representatives by email for comment.

It is not known whether Woodley shared the Melania Trump statement as a show of political support, but the actress has previously been outspoken in her views.

In 2016, she publicly endorsed and campaigned for Bernie Sanders' presidential nomination run and protested the proposed construction of a crude oil pipeline in North Dakota.

Melania Trump, who has kept a low public profile since her husband left the White House, released the rare public statement after Donald Trump's injury.

She urged Americans not to "forget that differing opinions, policy, and political games are inferior to love," and that "we are all humans, and fundamentally, instinctively, we want to help one another," because "love, compassion, kindness and empathy are necessities."

"And let us remember that when the time comes to look beyond the left and the right, beyond the red and the blue, we all come from families with the passion to fight for a better life together, while we are here, in this earthly realm," she wrote.

"Dawn is here again. Let us reunite... Ascend above the hate, the vitriol, and the simple-minded ideas that ignite violence."
