Roseanne Barr has taken aim at Stephen King, after the horror legend expressed concern about the state of America.

"I fear for my country," King wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday. The Shining author regularly shares his political views with 7 million followers on the platform.

Commenting on the post, Barr said: "China is doing great, actually," seeming to imply that King is a communist.

Newsweek has reached out to a representative of Stephen King for comment via email.

While King has yet to respond to Barr's remark, the It writer and comedian have very different views on politics. King first registered as a Democrat in the 1970s and is a vocal critic of Donald Trump, while Barr is an ardent supporter of the former president.

Trump has previously referred to persecution from "Marxists" and "communists," including in relation to his recent legal struggles. The 78-year-old has been indicted on 91 counts across four jurisdictions since March, 2023. Trump has suggested the charges are a political "witch hunt" to stop him winning the general election in November.

Some people praised Barr for the comment, with one user writing: "Love this."

"Queen," said @tomwils1967.

"You always bring those zingers," wrote DarbyB.

However, others slammed the sitcom star for the remark, one user telling Barr: "You're not funny."

"Wow to think I once really liked you," commented SteveMarco69.

"I feel sorry for you that you feel the need to insult people that way," said Miriam Hollstein.

King's message followed a series of posts about the assassination attempt on Trump on Saturday. The 78-year-old was shot in the ear after a gunman armed with an AR15-style rifle open-fired at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. One audience member was killed in the attack, while two others were injured.

King criticized Trump's stance on gun control laws in the wake of the incident.

During the National Rifle Association's Presidential Forum in February, Trump promised to roll back the Biden administration's gun restrictions.

"An AR-15 style semiautomatic rifle was used in the Butler shooting. These are the guns the Republican party—and Trump—want to protect," King wrote on X following the attack.

However, his post sparked backlash, with several users accusing the 76-year-old of spreading "hateful rhetoric" and contributing to political division in the country.

Clapping back at one critic who told him to "stay in his fictional lane," King said: "Here's what I know, as a responsible gun owner: Those people would be alive and Trump would be unwounded if all that crazy kid had access to was a butcher knife.

He continued: "Don't tell me to stay in my f****** lane. I'm an American. Are you, or are you a bot?"
