Shannen Doherty's first ex-husband, Ashley Hamilton, has publicly shared his thoughts for the first time since the actress's passing.
Hamilton, who was married to Doherty from 1993 to 1994, expressed deep admiration and affection for his late ex-wife, referring to her as his "guardian angel," in a statement to Us Weekly on Monday, July 15. "Even though things don't always work out the way we hope they will, she stood by my side during some of my darkest times," he said to the outlet, adding, "My love and admiration for her lasted far longer than our short-lived marriage."
Despite their brief marriage, which only lasted a year, Hamilton, 49, acknowledged that he had not contacted the Charmed actress during her battles with breast cancer in 2015 and once again in 2019. However, as a cancer survivor himself, he found her courage in facing the disease "inspiring," and that his "heart aches for her and for all those who loved her. May she rest in peace."
Hamilton's heartfelt tribute is quite the contrast from that of her most recent ex-husband, Kurt Iswarienk, who is receiving backlash from Doherty's fans online with how he handled their divorce. According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the 53-year-old actress settled her divorce with Iswarienko by signing a filing on Friday, July 12, waiving spousal support and indicating a "default or uncontested dissolution" of their marriage. The agreement was finalized on Saturday, July 13, when he signed the paperwork, which was the same day Doherty passed away.
"I dont want to read a single word of crap from Shannen Doherty's last ex-husband. She said he withheld money from her hoping she'd die. I hope he has whatever day he deserves," wrote one fan on X (formerly known as Twitter). Another fan noted, "Just a reminder that Shannen Doherty felt her husband was dragging out their divorce in hopes of her dying before he had to pay her."
Doherty claimed that her ex was "allowed to prolong our divorce in hopes that I die before he is required to pay me [spousal support]." However, Iswarienko's lawyer refuted this allegation.
The Beverly Hills, 90210 actress was also married to professional poker player Rick Salomon briefly from 2002–2003 in between Hamilton and Iswarienko.
