On Wednesday, July 17, The New York Times' Popcast (Deluxe) podcast did a ranking of every Taylor Swift album ever, and the Swifties are not happy.

Co-hosts Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli caught the ire of Swift fans for their rankings, which placed 2017's Reputation and 2010's Speak Now as her best, and 2020's Evermore and 2022's Midnights as her worst. A post from Taylor Swift Charts on X (formerly known as Twitter) shared this quick summary with fans, and boy, did they respond.

Fans were quick to comment on this tweet, with one posting, "Well the only album with literal no skips is 1989. Might not be the best lyrically but every song is a bop and not to mention its consistency in production as a whole album." Many agreed with this take, with another person posting, "Midnights, one of the best performing albums of the decade so far? Ok."

Some also defended both albums, such as in this comment, "evermore & midnights are her best albums and i am willing to die on that hill. i won't say her worst bc i value my safety." Another protective Swiftie posted, "literally evermore is her best album lyrically and midnights is one of her most mature works i don't know what the ny times is on."

Fans know Swift is incredibly proud of her lyrics, which is actually how the tradition of Easter eggs actually began. "I wanted to do something that incentivized fans to read the lyrics, because my lyrics are what I'm most proud of, out of everything that I do, every aspect of my job, so I really wanted people to read the lyrics," she said in a November 2021 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The Evermore fans came out in droves to defend the album, and its lyrics. "Evermore is lyrically perfect, I hope to see an update in the future when they realise this," one person posted on X. Another agreed, slighting Lover in the process, "Oof...this is not the hill to die on NYT. I really don't understand the hate for evermore. I adore that album. Lover is out there."

However, there were also people who defended Popcast (Deluxe), with one person writing, "everyone in the comments needs to actually LISTEN to the podcast bc it's so fun, hilarious, and includes two VERY different takes on Taylor's discography. Guys, it's ok to disagree on music."

Another pointed out that this is simply the two personal opinions of the co-hosts themselves, noting, "Just a disclaimer, since I watched their videocast. This is based on their personal tastes and not based on an objective take. This ranking is based on their personal favorites and not on which is the best in a critical perspective."

The now-viral podcast release came one day after Swift's camp revealed the next single from her latest record-breaking album, The Tortured Poets Department. On Tuesday, July 16, Swift announced through her official fan account Taylor Nation that "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" will be her next single. The news also came with a "cute new cover" for the single on all streaming platforms.
