Martha Stewart has shocked actor Michael Kelly after revealing she found it difficult dating Anthony Hopkins because of his role in the film Silence of the Lambs.

Stewart launched her podcast—The Martha Stewart Podcast—in June 2022 in partnership with iHeart Radio. She interviews different people who inspire her, such as actors, entrepreneurs and friends.

On July 18, Stewart released the episode "The Softer Side of House of Cards' Actor Michael Kelly," in which she interviewed the star at her home.

While discussing actors and how they transform for roles, Stewart said she couldn't face Hopkins after she saw him portray convicted cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter. She began dating Hopkins following her divorce from Andrew Stewart in 1990.

Newsweek emailed a spokesperson for Stewart and Hopkins for comment on Friday.

"I've tried going out with some actors in the past, and their parts scare me, some of them, and most notably was the man who played Hannibal Lecter," Stewart said.

"Is that right?" Kelly queried.

"And I couldn't, I couldn't get past the Hannibal Lecter," she added as Kelly laughed.

"That's a specifically tough one, though, I would say to get past. It would be, like, 'No, I can't snuggle with you,'" Kelly said as he continued to chuckle.

Stewart added: "It was so hard."

This isn't the first time that Stewart has revealed she broke up with Hopkins after seeing his Oscar-winning role in Jonathan Demme's 1991 horror thriller. In January 2020, the businesswoman went into further detail during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

"I dated Sir Anthony Hopkins but broke up with him because I couldn't stop thinking of him as Hannibal Lecter," Stewart said.

She added: "I have a big, scary house in Maine that's way by itself on 100 acres in a forest, and I couldn't even imagine taking Anthony Hopkins there. I couldn't, because all I could think of was him eating, you know."

When DeGeneres asked Stewart if she "stopped because of that," she said: "Yeah."

During a 2014 interview on The Meredith Vieira Show, Stewart said she and Hopkins' relationship hadn't been all that serious. She added that, although they "went out to dinner" occasionally, "all I could think about was Hannibal Lecter."

Elsewhere in Stewart's podcast episode, Stewart and Kelly discussed the latter's roles as CIA agents, political operatives and military personnel during his prolific acting career.

Stewart said that, while Kelly is known to play intense and intimidating characters, he is nothing like that in real life.

"Michael is a smiley guy, he has a—he's nothing like the parts he plays. He's really friendly, and he's really handsome, and he's really athletic, and he's really fast-moving. And when you see him in some of his performances, you are scared to death," Stewart said.
