Following Kamala Harris releasing a statement expressing her intention to earn and win the Democrat nomination for president, people are waiting for Maya Rudolph to reprise her role as the vice president for Saturday Night Live (SNL).

On Sunday, President Joe Biden announced that he would not be seeking reelection in the 2024 presidential race, and threw his support behind Harris. Biden's decision followed weeks of pressure from within his own party and from key Democratic donors to step down amid concerns over his age and mental acuity.

While Rudolph appeared on SNL from 2000 to 2007, she debuted her Harris character during the 2020 election cycle in SNL's impeachment town hall sketch, introducing herself as "America's cool aunt. A fun aunt. I call that a 'Funt.'"

She has returned to the character various times since then, including in December 2019 as part of the PBS Democratic Debate cold open just after Harris herself had dropped out of the race. Rudolph won an Emmy for her performance.

Now people on X, formerly Twitter, are hoping that Rudolph will play Harris on the weekly comedy show once again.

Newsweek emailed a spokesperson for Rudolph for comment on Monday.

"Hope Maya Rudolph has cleared her schedule," one person posted alongside a photo of Rudolph as Harris, wearing a pair of sunglasses and sipping on a cocktail. At the time of writing, the post had been viewed 3.9 million times.

"Maya Rudolph checking her email right now," someone else joked alongside a clip from the TV series Succession that sees the character Roman Roy looking at his computer as an avalanche of emails drops in. It was viewed 1.7 million times.

In another post, someone shared an edited photo of Rudolph holding an umbrella while money rains down around her. "Maya Rudolph on that next phone call with Lorne Michaels," they captioned the post, which had 1.5 million views at the time of writing.

A fourth person added: "maya rudolph walking into the SNL writers room today knowing they're gonna get her several more guest actress emmy wins." They accompanied the post with a video of Harris dancing with school children.

"Lorne Michaels showing up at Maya Rudolph's house," a user wrote alongside a picture of a man holding up cash as he kneels at someone's front door. It had been viewed 105,200 times.

Since 2007, Rudolph has made several guest appearances on SNL and hosted the show three times, the last time in May. During an appearance on The View in the same month, Rudolph reminisced about her time on SNL and what it was like to return as a host.

She said her beloved roles would not be possible without the crew members behind the scenes that "make magic happen."

"The costumes and the wigs nail it so well that I feel like once you're dressed, I feel like 'Oh, I believe I am this person, truly,'" Rudolph said.

Reflecting on her hosting gig, she said: "It's very exciting to come back as the host because it's something you know, but then you get to make decisions. But I forgot how hard it was."

She was "exhausted" after hosting the show because she was out of practice.

"I was not acclimated, so going back for a week, I'm going to need a week's worth of rest," the comedian joked.

Assuming she secures the nomination, Harris will have less than 100 days to make her case against former President Donald Trump, in an election that was trending in Trump's direction even before Biden's politically fatal debate.

Before she can focus on Trump, Harris has to consolidate support for her candidacy—and while most Democrats believe she'll be the eventual nominee, the next few days and weeks will be a critical period for the vice president and her allies.

Only time will tell if Rudolph will reprise her role as Harris.
