Conservative pundit Candace Owens questioned why former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle wasn't fired after her congressional hearing this week.

Cheatle stepped down on Tuesday after a four-hour grilling by the House Oversight Committee on Monday about the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Following the shooting, which killed one person and injured a further two, many called for Cheatle's resignation as questions arose as to how the shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was able to climb onto a roof about 450 feet from the Republican presidential candidate and open fire on him with a .22-fitted AR-style rifle.

"The fact that Kim Cheatle was given the opportunity to resign as opposed to being fired is really something," Owens said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday, which has been viewed 1.3 million times.

Over 1,000 commenters reacted to Owens' opinion in the replies to the post.

"The fact that she is not being investigated as a suspect of at least obstruction if not collusion is really something," wrote @cancelcloco.

"Well they made a big circus out of it, they're probably hoping everyone will stop asking questions now and move on to the next news item," replied @jameslovinsky.

"The fact her replacement will blame lack of funding, ask for a budget increase and will get it is even more something," said @andy_buksterlin.

Owens recently opened up about her husband's brush with the Secret Service on her eponymous podcast as she questioned the circumstances around Trump's attempted assassination.

Looking back on her experience having been in Trump's presence during his presidency, Owens said: "I was around him a lot—a lot. And let me tell you something, [with] the Secret Service, there is no person that can get around the perimeter of the Secret Service where Donald Trump is without them being aware of it."

"I am not kidding when I say that my husband once almost got shot by the Secret Service because he came down a staircase. I was speaking at the NRA (in 2019), and he snaked in and came down, and they didn't know who he was. They were like, 'Freeze, we will shoot you right now.'"

Owens later said: "I don't believe this, not for one second, having been around the president, having literally almost watched my husband get shot because he came down the wrong set of stairs at the NRA. Screaming at him...I jumped in front of someone like, 'Don't shoot him. That's my husband.'"
