Tori Spelling has set the record straight behind her delay in publicly commenting on her friend and former co-star Shannen Doherty's death earlier this month.

The actress addressed the confusion her supposed holdup had sparked among fans, with some even questioning if the pair were pals after all.

The 51-year-old first met Doherty, who died on July 13, while filming the Beverly Hills, 90210 pilot aged 15; the latter was two years older. Speaking out in her first misSPELLING podcast in over two weeks, Spelling uploaded an episode dedicated to the late Heathers favorite, entitled "Miss Rebel", yesterday.

Fifteen minutes into the special installment, Spelling addressed receiving the tough news and why she waited before sharing her "F*** them" tribute via Instagram.

Saying it had been really hard to write and upload, Spelling said: "I talked to a friend who said, 'Do it in your own time... Handle it your way, no one expects anything.'

"I wish that were true. I did watch on social media as I did take a day before I posted, because my thoughts were everywhere and I wanted it to be right."

Spelling said how she "didn't want to rush it up to be like, 'Oh, look, see how much I loved Shannen. I have a post up immediately with a picture of us.'"

The star added: "During that day I did see comments like, 'Oh, I thought Tori and Shannen were friends; Tori hasn't posted. Maybe they weren't friends.'"

Spelling said: "I had to be like, that's just outside noise, let it go [but] it seeped in."

She continued: "The post I put up, I actually think Shannen would've been really proud. I would've called out a few more things if I'd really wanted to please her.

"It was very authentically me, which is all she ever told me to be," Spelling said.

Her online tribute to her 1.8 million followers recalled her first encounter with Doherty and has since been liked more than 270,000 times.

Spelling said how "rebel" Doherty had taken her under her wing, and they became fast best friends.

Spelling concluded: "I'll stay rebellious for you. Love you with all my heart. Always."

Doherty's cause of death was breast cancer, which returned in 2020 as Stage 4, five years after she was first diagnosed with the disease.
