Dave Portnoy, the controversial businessman and social media star, is known for pushing boundaries with his comedy videos. His irreverent Barstool Sports empire has made him famous, but this week he took fans behind the scenes in a way they never expected–by taking them along for his colonoscopy appointment.

Portnoy, 47, has been candid about medical issues in the past, casually announcing that he had (and had already beaten) basal cell carcinoma in June 2024.

The star of One Bite Pizza Reviews partnered with non-profit Lead From Behind to raise awareness for colon cancer. Colon cancer, he explained, "is one of the leading killers of men." Portnoy called himself a "captain" and explained that although "it sucks getting old," the procedure is important and he wanted to set a good example.

Portnoy began fasting after "seven f***in' dinners from Giacomo's" to prep for his procedure. He struggled to not eat the day before his colonoscopy and posted on X at 9:10am the next day, "I'm starving. May not make it."

It seems he persevered through the hunger pangs, however, because at 5:48 a.m. ET on July 31, he posted on X: "Rise and shine, it's colonoscopy time!" He also tweeted a video from the hospital, where he expressed frustration that no one was there to greet him after he'd been told to arrive an hour early. "If this was school and teacher hadn't shown up yet i think you can leave," he joked.

The procedure seems to have gone perfectly, as the businessman has already posted a video of the aftermath of the procedure. Apparently still a bit loopy from propofol, the anesthetic used in the procedure, he declared, "I understand why Michael Jackson got addicted to that sh**. Gimme some more of that shi**." (Michael Jackson died from an overdose of propofol in 2009.)

According to their X bio, Lead From Behind, the organization that Portnoy partnered with, is "on a mission to make colon cancer famous." With support from Deadpool and Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds and his Maximum Effort production company, their goal is to remove the taboo around colon screenings and colonoscopies. With 3.2 million followers on X, Portnoy's videos will help spread that message.
