Bette Midler has caused a stir after highlighting a quote from Minnesota Governor Tim Walz addressing criticism for appearing older than his years.

Midler posted a screenshot of remarks by activist and writer Amy Siskind on Wednesday that read: "Walz, 60, has drawn criticism for appearing older than his age. Walz responded on X, saying that it's because he 'supervised the lunchroom for 20 years. You do not leave that job with a full head of hair. Trust me.'"

Midler was soon inundated with replies after 174,000 views, 12,000 likes and almost 2,000 retweets on the post, which also included photos of Walz and Vice President Kamala Harris, who announced him as her running mate on Tuesday.

"It's so nice to have leaders who can be humble and self-deprecating. And make us laugh alongside," @ShimantiG responded to Midler's post.

"As an educator: I'm impressed that he still has his hearing," @TruWordsRSpoken wrote.

Midler is a frequent critic of former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican nominee, and has been vocal in her support for Harris. When the vice president made her announcement, Midler posted a screenshot of the remarks Walz made about joining the Democratic ticket and has continued to bash Trump.

The hubbub about Walz's appearance began when X user @_fat_ugly_rat_ posted, "How on earth are these two people the same age?" with side-by-side images of Harris and Walz. The Democratic presidential candidate is six months younger than the governor.

"Because Tim Walz taught high school. Trust me," Daily Kos editor Steve Singiser replied.

Walz shared his anecdote about his years as a teacher in reply to Singiser, sparking 55,000 likes and more than 4,000 shares.

After graduating from Chadron State College in 1989, Walz spent a year teaching abroad before returning to serve in the National Guard. He later taught social studies and geography in Minnesota until he decided to run for public office.

Walz's wife Gwen, who he married in 1994, was also a teacher, and together they established Educational Travel Adventures Inc.

Since Harris chose him as her running mate on Tuesday, Walz has been besieged by comments about his appearance.

Social media users have been quick to point out that actors Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise look younger than him when they are 60 and 62, respectively.

Others have suggested actor and comedian Steve Martin bears a striking resemblance, despite being 18 years older—even lobbying for the comedian to portray the governor on the upcoming season of Saturday Night Live.
