The "fit check" has become a TikTok tradition – celebs talk to their fans about what they're wearing before a night out. But singer-songwriter Liam Payne drew some negative attention for a Tuesday, August 13 TikTok in which he joked about his girlfriend's outfit.

Payne, 30, has been romantically linked to influencer Kate Cassidy since 2022. As Cassidy, 25, talked viewers through the pieces of her ensemble (an all black vest and leggings from Evolve, Dior heels, and a red Chanel bag), Liam asserted that his girlfriend looked good. "Nice and covered up... for once," he added, prompting a slight chuckle from Cassidy.

Fans in the comments were mixed in their reactions to Payne's one-liner, with some taking it as light-hearted teasing between two partners and others finding it more sinister. "Liam you have a song called Strip That Down, make up your mind," said one fan. Cassidy replied to a fan comment by writing "FOR ONCE" in all caps, seemingly comfortable making jokes about the aside.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), responses were more negative. One user wrote, "i don't even wanna know how he talks to her off camera..." while several others alluded to the fact that Payne has bared quite a bit of skin in his social media posts and called him a hypocrite.

Cassidy responded to the backlash with another TikTok, in which she explains that she told Payne to make the joke because she rarely gets "dressed up."

"If you look at my Instagram," she said, "I actually don't cover up too much. Honestly, I'm 25, I kinda just wear what I want. And he doesn't care at all." She laughed at the "Strip That Down" comments, at which point Payne joined her on camera.

"'Strip That Down' is a song about keeping music stripped down, ok? So get it right," he chided his fans. One fan applauded the couple for responding to the backlash. "Good for you for addressing it. I mean you shouldn't have to at all but good for you! Loling at his explaining the song!"
