Grey's Anatomy cast member Jessica Capshaw was given a social media warning ahead of her alter ego Arizona Robbins' infidelity storyline.

The actress, who played the pediatric surgeon between 2009 and 2018, revealed the advice she got while speaking to her former co-star Camilla Luddington on their Call It What It Is podcast.

The 48-year-old and the Jo Wilson star, 40, were taking part in a Q&A with fans when talk turned to whether they had any input into the medical drama's plot.

Capshaw explained that while she wants the characters to be "happy," conflict is of course needed to keep the show interesting.

Six minutes into the podcast's August 8 episode, "Call It Short & Sweet: Arizona and Jo," Capshaw recalled Robbins and Callie Torres' (played by Sara Ramirez) "meteor", which fans saw back in 2013's season nine cliffhanger.

Capshaw said: "I felt in my on-screen ship, which was Calzona, it was like, OK great they're happy and that's wonderful, we want them to be together and yes that's right, and you champion that romance and we need a little friction. We need a little obstacle."

"Well they threw in a meteor!" Luddington quipped, to which her friend responded: "So many though."

It was then that Luddington remembered how a social media backlash to Robbins cheating on Torres was anticipated behind the scenes.

She recalled: "I remember Jessica getting the infidelity script, which is one of my favorite season finales because of that moment... which is just incredible—you guys all know what I'm talking about. The rings pinned to the scrubs.

"I remember someone saying to Capshaw, 'You're going to have to get off social media for a little bit'."

She added: "And she was like, 'Yep'. We knew that that meteor was going to rock the fandom."

The episode, "Perfect Storm," saw Torres find out about Robbins' one-night stand with Lauren Boswell (Hilarie Burton), after seeing the former's wedding ring pinned inside the latter's scrubs.

It came in the aftermath of Robbins' amputation and her bitterness towards her wife for making the decision.

After ill-fated attempts at therapy and attempts to have a second child, it is in season 11 that the couple end their relationship.

However, Robbins' exit from the show in season 14 saw her move to New York to be closer to her now-single ex and daughter Sofia.

Speaking previously on leaving Grey's, Capshaw wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "I am sad to see her [Robbins] go, but I am consoled by the idea that she will continue to live on and on in all of our consciences and our imaginations.

"Shonda [Rhimes, creator], thank you for the ride on this incredible rollercoaster."
