Lord Cameron will pay tribute to Steve Wright during six hours of coverage scheduled for the late BBC presenter on his former radio station.

The former Prime Minister was a fan and one-time guest of Wright, who worked for the BBC for more than 20 years before his death in February.

Lord Cameron will join the DJ’s former colleagues and stars from the world of entertainment as they pay tribute in three dedicated programmes scheduled to air on Radio 2 on August 26, which would have marked his 70th birthday.

When Lord Cameron appeared on Wright’s show in 2011 he named Nigella Lawson and Elizabeth I as his ideal dinner guests, and said that his favourite cuisine was Italian.

Vernon Kay will present a two-hour special which will include tributes from Wright’s friends including Richard Curtis, Dawn French, Emma Freud, Barry Gibb, Peter Kay, Billy Ocean and Will Young.

Kay said: “Steve Wright was the Don of UK radio, the master of his craft and an absolute perfectionist, researching each guest meticulously to ensure he had the right question at the right time. He put his guests at ease and, by doing so, teased out never heard before anecdotes and facts from them.

“Steve was always putting smiles on the faces of his guests as well as his listeners, so it’s an honour to present this celebratory programme, where we’ll hear tributes from some of The Big Show’s most famous guests.”

Paul Gambaccini will host another two-hour programme incorporating archival recordings of Wright, in which the late DJ will be heard explaining his life and career, and how he made music choices.

Gambaccini held a string of jobs at the BBC, including a Radio 1 presenting role for 16 years, before making way for Wright who took over his Pick of the Pops show in 2023.

In another two-hour block of tributes, Liza Tarbuck will give listeners the chance to share their own memories of Wright such as having had wedding or anniversary dedications read out by him on Love Songs.

An inquest in May revealed that Wright died suddenly at his London home from a ruptured stomach ulcer.

Wright went on to hold a variety of positions after joining BBC Radio 1 in 1980 to host a Saturday evening show.

After a stint at commercial radio, he returned to BBC Radio 2 in 1996 to host Steve Wright’s Saturday Show and Sunday Love Songs, and three years later presented Steve Wright in the Afternoon every weekday on Radio 2.

Wright was replaced by Scott Mills in a schedule shake-up in September 2022, but continued to present Sunday Love Songs on Radio 2.
