Ohio Senator JD Vance was called out by comedian John Oliver for "scolding people for enjoying stuff."

On Sunday's episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver's late-night talk show, the comedian discussed the Republican vice presidential nominee—whom former President Donald Trump chose as his running mate on July 15, days before President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

"The Trump campaign continued trying to counter enthusiasm for the Democrats' new ticket, with JD Vance—a man who virtually looks like he got stuck 10 percent of the way to transforming into a werewolf—desperately trying to spin the joy of Harris' recent rallies as a negative," Oliver said.

While making a speech in Byron Center, Michigan, on Wednesday, Vance took aim at Harris.

"She says she's having fun, but while she's having fun, Americans are suffering under her policies," he said. "When she laughs during a speech, remember that there are American families crying this very day because they cannot afford groceries. When she does these rallies and does these events and does these fake dances, remember that there are parents who lost their children to drugs or violence who will never see their children move again, much less dance again."

On Last Week Tonight, Oliver said of Vance's comments: "What are you doing? Scolding people for enjoying stuff because there are sadder things happening elsewhere is a s****y thing to do—although it does make me curious what Vance is like in other social situations."

Newsweek has contacted Vance's team for comment via email.

This isn't the first time Oliver has called out Vance on the HBO series. On August 13, Last Week Tonight's official TikTok and Instagram accounts shared a clip from the show of Oliver discussing the Republican.

"Trump's VP choice, JD Vance—a man with the face you get if you Google 'bachelor party arrest'—continues to underwhelm," Oliver said, before introducing a C-Span clip of Vance "choosing the worst possible answer to a pretty easy question."

In the video, a reporter asked Vance, "What makes you smile? What makes you happy?" after saying the marine veteran had been "criticized as being a little too serious, a little angry sometimes."

Oliver's suggested answers included "my kids, dogs that sleep weird, a warm bath." However, Vance called the question "bogus" and said he's "having a good time out here" but is "angry about what Kamala Harris has done to this country and done to the American southern border."

The video's caption said: "A lot of things make J.D. Vance happy, ok? He just doesn't have time to list all of them right now because he's busy being angry. Obviously."

The clip has been viewed more than 1.3 million times on TikTok and more than 290,000 times on Instagram.

In the comments sections, social media users were quick to share their opinions of Vance and Oliver's commentary.

One user wrote, "The way he insulted a question that was basically designed to help him seem more likeable and then failed to answer it!"

"He's literally a charisma void," another added.

"John's commentary's are getting worse every wk," a commenter wrote.

On X, formerly Twitter, Last Week Tonight announced a two-week hiatus on Sunday.

"We've got a new episode tonight at 11pm! Then, sadly, we're off until Sept 8th," the post said. "We begged the network to let us make more shows. We said 'please, John has no idea how to take a vacation, you should see him try to sit on a beach, it's humiliating, just let him work.' But no dice."
