Richard Simmons' official cause of death was finally disclosed after the fitness icon was found unresponsive at his Los Angeles home last month.

According to a spokesperson for his family, the Los Angeles Coroner's Office disclosed to Page Six on Wednesday, August 21, that Simmons passed away due to "complications from recent falls," with heart disease also playing a contributing role.

His death was classified as accidental, with the family's representative, Tom Estey, emphasizing that the toxicology report revealed no substances beyond Simmons' prescribed medications. "The toxicology report was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed," he revealed to the publication. In a heartfelt message, Estey conveyed the family's gratitude for the outpouring of support, noting the widespread affection for the beloved fitness guru.

The news has been shared to Simmons' Facebook page, where he remained active up until he passed. Simmons' brother Lenny Simmons has been maintaining the page and updating fans since the athlete's death.

Fans were quick to comment on the update, taking to the comments to share their thoughts. "You know it's true.... He was needed by a whole new generation struggling with weight and diet. One of our true treasures," said one fan. "He was truly one of a kind and made so many people happy, " another seemingly agreed.

Others thanked Lenny for the updates, leaving comments like, "Dear Lenny, thank you for continuing to share Richard with us," and, " want to thank Lenny for always keeping us posted."

The news follows the incident on July 13, when Simmons was found unconscious by his housekeeper after reportedly falling in his bathroom the night before. Simmons, who became a household name during the 1980s and 1990s, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 76 years old.

Prior to his passing, Simmons had reportedly declined medical attention despite his housekeeper urging him to seek help after the fall. In a statement to PEOPLE, the housekeeper, Teresa Reveles, suggested he might have suffered a heart attack, noting that his hands were clenched into fists — a symptom she experienced during her own heart attack years earlier. "That's why I know it was a heart attack. I had a heart attack a few years ago, and my hands did the same," she recounted to the publication.
