Actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner's remark about the ongoing Democratic National Convention—in which he took a swipe at former President Donald Trump—has gone viral on social media.
With a scheduled run of August 19-22, the DNC has seen Vice President Kamala Harris accept the presidential nomination ahead of November's election. Harris is a late entrant to the race after President Joe Biden announced in July that he would not be seeking reelection. She is now on course to face Republican rival Trump at the polls.
Reiner, who has long been a vocal supporter of the Democratic Party, announced on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday that he and his wife, Michele Singer, were heading to Chicago and were "so proud to stand with Kamala Harris as she makes history."
On Tuesday, When Harry Met Sally... director Reiner returned to the platform to share an observation after Harris addressed DNC attendees from a campaign stop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the Republican National Convention was held in July.
He wrote: "In a major take down of Donald Trump, Kamala Harris just addressed the DNC convention in Chicago from the same arena In Milwaukee where Trump accepted the Republican nomination. She is kicking his Criminal a**."
As of press time, Reiner's post has garnered more than 150,000 views.
In another message shared on the social media platform, Reiner opined that the upcoming presidential election will be about more than backing a party.
"This is the first election in American history where we are not choosing between a Democrat or a Republican," he commented. "We are choosing either Democracy or Autocracy. I trust America will make the right choice."
While delegates and party leaders gathered in Chicago for the second night of the DNC, Vice President Harris rallied supporters over 80 miles away in Milwaukee.
Harris' campaign said that over 15,000 supporters gathered at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee Tuesday night, where the Democratic nominee spoke alongside her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Harris took the stage in Wisconsin immediately after the DNC finished a ceremonial roll-call, where delegates confirmed Harris and Walz as their choice for the 2024 presidential ticket.
"We are so honored to be your nominees," Harris said from Milwaukee while addressing the DNC via a live stream. "Together we will chart a new way forward."
Meanwhile, Reiner, who is a frequent critic of Trump, had previously joined the chorus of calls from within his party for Biden to step down amid concerns over the 81-year-old president's age and mental acuity.
Hollywood actor George Clooney penned a July 10 New York Times op-ed titled "I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee." The Oscar winner wrote that while he considers Biden "a friend" and does "believe in him," Democrats "are not going to win in November with this president."
Sharing a link to the article on X, at the time Reiner echoed that sentiment, writing: "My friend George Clooney has clearly expressed what many of us have been saying. We love and respect Joe Biden. We acknowledge all he has done for our country. But Democracy is facing an existential threat. We need someone younger to fight back. Joe Biden must step aside."
However, Reiner did concede in another X post that if "Biden refuses to step aside, I'm 100% behind him." He has since enthusiastically backed the Harris-Walz ticket.
