Their show may be called Only Murders In The Building, but could said building make way for a showmance? At the premiere of the show's fourth season on Thursday, August 22, two of the show's co-stars were sure looking cozy on the red carpet.
On Only Murders In The Building, Martin Short and Meryl Streep play theater director Oliver Putnam and actress Loretta Durkin, who find love interests in one another. While their romance is a fan favorite, both Short, 74, and Streep, 75, have denied dating rumors. But this didn't stop the two esteemed actors from holding hands on the blue carpet during the premiere.
Streep wore a blue Stella McCartney dress, cinched with three black belts, while Short donned a black and white suit with a maroon tie.
Over the years, Short and Streep have maintained a tight friendship, often seen attending Broadway shows together. However, both parties have insisted that they are simply friends, and nothing more. Short was previously married to his wife, Nancy Dolman, from 1980 until her death in 2010. Streep married to Don Gummer in 1978, however, she revealed in a 2023 interview ahead of Only Murders In The Building's third season that she and Gummer had separated six years prior.
In an interview with The Wrap published in August 2023, Only Murders In The Building showrunner John Hoffman spoke of Short and Streep's on-screen chemistry, saying, "It's pretty unexpected to imagine a pairing of Meryl Streep with Martin Short and watch them find this incredible connection together and, as Meryl said, to not have it be twee or about the age or about any of that. It's just a beautiful romance that you buy, I think because of who these two characters are."
During a visit from Short to Bill Maher's Club Random podcast back in January, Maher referred to them as a power couple. Short clarified, "We're not a couple. We are just very close friends."
While the two continue to deny dating rumors in real life, fans will soon get to see their romance play out on screen.
Only Murders In The Building's fourth season premieres on Tuesday, August 27 on Hulu.
