Katy Perry has spoken about the year that she spent apart from Orlando Bloom before they reunited and eventually got engaged.

The "Woman's World" singer and Lord of the Rings actor first dated in 2016, and less than a year later they had split up. But their love was meant to be and they rekindled the romance in 2018, got engaged the following year and in 2020 welcomed their daughter, Daisy Dove.

Perry spoke about how she and Bloom "kind of" spoke during their separation because he was "boundaried" and going through his own healing journey by undergoing the Hoffman Process, a week-long retreat aimed on rewiring your brain and negative patterns of thought and behavior.

"We weren't really in it from day one," Perry told Alex Cooper on her Call Her Daddy podcast on Wednesday. "He was, because he had just done a huge time of celibacy and he had set intentions. I was fresh out of a relationship, and I was like, I can't do this anymore. I need to swim in a different pond, but I had to do a lot of real work."

She continued: "He went there, and he wasn't playing that cat-mouse game anymore, and I was like, 'This is boring. I'm moving on.' I was so used to this push-pull. Because once you have it. I was playing games."

After a "really tough year" apart, Perry followed in Bloom's footsteps and attended the retreat, which she said saved her life.

"I finally went to Hoffman towards the end of that year that we were separated, and I got the tools," she said, adding: "We spoke the same language.

"I would be dead without it. I would not be on this planet without that process and meditation. Because the noise got so large.

"When Witness [Perry's 2017 album] came out and things started to shift, and I thought I really loved myself. I thought I really had that center, but actually that core was created from outside validation. It just helped me rewire what I think about myself, and it helped me connect my head to my heart."

Cooper also asked the pop star who initiated their reunion.

"I was doing a show that was close to where he was on vacation, and I was like, 'I'll pop over!'" Perry told her.

She explained how she was "in a bad state" at the time of seeing Bloom again and added: "We all have our strengths and then our opportunities for growths. But one of his strengths are when I crumble, he can step in and be that anchor. Because I'm usually just alpha, alpha, you know? I'm like testosterone, testosterone. 'I got this, I don't need any help.' But actually, I do need help. I do need a partner."

The former American Idol judge got emotional and choked up as she spoke: "That got me," she told Cooper.
