Singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae has spoken about her first husband's death and the "one dumb decision" that led to it.

The "Put Your Records On" hitmaker's spouse Jason Rae died of an accidental methadone overdose in 2008, when she was 29 years old.

The performer, 45, has now addressed what happened in a new interview with The Independent, branding it both "annoying" and "frustrating."

Bailey Rae has since remarried, tying the knot to keyboardist Steve Brown in 2013. The couple have since welcomed two daughters.

But 31-year-old jazz musician Rae's death 16 years ago came shortly after her 2006 self-titled debut album shot to success, remaining in the Billboard 200 for over a year.

Bailey Rae, whose late spouse played saxophone in her band, said of how he died: "It is really annoying that it wasn't a different story.

"There were so many of our friends who had done crazier things or taken more risks."

She continued: "It was frustrating to compare his relatively low-risk encounters to date with that one dumb decision. I guess it's really easy to die."

Leeds Coroner's Court previously heard how Rae had alcohol and methadone—a medicine often used to treat heroin dependence—in his blood at the time of his death.

Speaking in a statement at the time, the star said: "My husband is my first and only true love. He is the most beautiful and complex person I have ever known. He is utterly irreplaceable."

As she promotes her new single "SilverCane" and album Black Rainbows, Bailey Rae details how her marriage was one of the factors that led to her being seen as "boring" in her early career.

Discussing the press reaction at the time, she told the aforementioned publication: "I was making acoustic music, wearing these kinds of old-fashioned dresses. I was also married. I was so not interesting to them."

She says her music label was "hands-off" after Rae died, stating: "They knew they couldn't put any pressure on me because I was so vulnerable."

Bailey Rae released The Sea in 2010 and followed it up six years later with The Heart Speaks in Whispers.

Her latest offering is inspired by a visit to Chicago's Stony Island Arts Bank, a gallery, media archive, library and community center.

She said: "I'm used to making records about my internal world: my experiences, relationships, stories I had or had heard.

"But this felt quite obscure... I felt I was always asking permission to go and make this."
