There's a divide among Taylor Swift's fandom — and it has everything to do with her friendship with Brittany Mahomes.
Swift, 34, and Mahomes, 29, both made headlines at the Kansas City Chiefs opener on Thursday, September 5 — not for any appearance together, but because they were seated separately following Mahomes' alleged support of former President Donald Trump. (The WAGs' noticeable distance from each other is notably a far cry from last season, where Swift and Mahomes hugged, cheered and rooted for the Chefs side by side in the same suite.)
It is the political factor — Mahomes' reported support of Trump — that has fans of the "Maroon" singer infighting with each other, arguing over Swift's bond with the soccer player — and what their friendship could mean about Swift's political affiliations. (Though Swift has not publicly endorsed a presidential candidate this election year, she has made her liberal stance known in the past by openly slamming Trump and voting for the Biden/Harris ticket in 2020.)
Before Thursday's game even unfolded, fans were upset while predicting that the 14-time Grammy winner — who is famously dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce — was going to be cheering alongside Brittany, who is married to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
"taylor if you hug brittany mahomes on national tv tomorrow i cannot defend you anymore!" one fan wrote via X (formerly known as Twitter).
"taylor please please PLEASE do not hug Brittany mahomes," another person begged.
A third user took an even stronger stance. "blocking anyone who defends taylor hanging w brittany mahomes bc it is NOT just politics it's human rights," they wrote.
However, others staunchly defended their idol, reminding their fellow Swifties that just because the singer spends time with Brittany does not mean she follows her politics.
"A reminder that Brittany Mahomes' political views have nothing to do with Taylor Swift. Please stop involving her," one person emphasized.
"I'm not even gonna hold y'all's hand when I say this because you need to be brought back to planet Earth - the moment that Taylor Swift began dating a Chiefs player (and not just any Chiefs player, TRAVIS KELCE) she was going to have to be seen around Brittany Mahomes," another person pointed out.
Lastly, one fan tried to use the drama to their advantage — by requesting Eras Tour tickets from anyone who is done with Swift due to her friendship with Brittany.
"If anyone needs to get rid of some eras tour Miami tickets after Taylor is seen standing near Brittany Mahomes tonight, my DMs are open," they quipped.
While Swift and Brittany were ultimately a no-show together Thursday night, their partners have a whole NFL season ahead of them — meaning it's entirely possible that the two will not only be spending a lot of time together, but also potentially in the same suite.
As the internet — even a fandom with the same common goal to support their idol — is filled with wildly different opinions, it looks like the infighting will most likely continue.
