In a recent interview with Variety, legendary musician Sir Elton John made an impassioned appeal to American voters ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer urged the country to reflect on its values and "make the right decision" at the polls.
Known for his candid views on social justice, John expressed concerns about the current state of the world and the growing political divide.
"America is in a very volatile position. And it's a country I love, and I've always loved, and I'm so thankful that it made me who I am."
John, who has been a longtime advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and LGBTQ+ rights through his Elton John AIDS Foundation, noted the importance of electing leaders who will safeguard human rights and promote inclusion.
"I just want people to vote for things that are just, things that are important to people: the right to choose, the right to be who you are, and not let anybody else tell you who to be. And that goes all the way up to the Supreme Court."
The British musician refrained from explicitly endorsing any candidate.
"I don't go on stage and say to people, 'You must vote for the Republicans, you must vote for the Democrats.' It's none of my business how they vote. They come to see me, and I'm so grateful they have," John said.
Newsweek reached out to John via his foundation's website for further comment on Sunday.
In the interview, which took place at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada, the singer spoke about his hit song "Rocketman" being the inspiration for former President Donald Trump's nickname "The Little Rocket Man" for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
"I laughed, I thought that was brilliant. I just thought, 'Good on you, Donald... Donald's always been a fan of mine, and he's been to my concerts many, many times. So, I mean, I've always been friendly toward him, and I thank him for his support. When he did that, I just thought it was hilarious. It made me laugh."
While John usually stays fairly neutral when it comes to U.S. politics and elections, his comments in the Variety interview emphasized his desire for voters to remain informed and engaged.
"Kindness will always win out. That's what I hope for the American election in November," he stated, saying he was hoping for a "calmer America."
