At 77, Sir Elton John is facing the music of mortality with his family by his side. In his new documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late, the legendary musician shares a heart-to-heart on the concerns his young sons have about his health and the inevitable passage of time.

The film captures intimate family moments and explores the fears of his kids, Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11. "They think about my mortality. They worry about my mortality," Elton says in the film, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Friday, September 6.

The five-time Grammy-winning artist admitted, "Not so much David, but me," referencing his husband and the boy's other father, David Furnish. Elton added that Zachary and Elijah "love their daddy, so they want me to be around forever, [and] I would love to be around forever."

Keeping it real about the future, the "Crocodile Rock" singer emphasized making the most of the present. "I want to see them have children and get married. I don't think I'm going to be around for that. Who knows? You never know," he said, adding, "So that's why I want to use the best time — the best of my time — while I'm around. Time together is so wonderful and so precious."

On Tuesday, September 3, Elton took to Instagram to share a health update. "Over the summer, I've been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye," he wrote. "I am healing, but it's an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye."

Vision woes aside, the music icon has faced life-threatening health scares over the years, including a misdiagnosis of a colon infection that was actually appendicitis, and severe complications from prostate cancer surgery in 2017.

In August 2023, Elton faced another scare after slipping at his villa in the South of France, requiring a brief hospital stay. He has also undergone surgeries for his knee and hip.
