The biggest names in music turned out for the MTV Video Music Awards this Wednesday, September 11. And of course, there was bound to be some drama. But some acts were seemingly prepared.

Ahead of the show, Shawn Mendes took to X (formerly Twitter) to share some photos, and evidently, foreshadow some disastrous events. "Pulling up to my own funeral," said Mendes in the post's caption.

While it's unclear what Mendes meant, some fans gathered that he could've been alluding to the fact that two of his exes — singers Camila Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter — were in attendance.

During the night, Mendes debuted a new song, "Nobody Knows," which fans immediately theorized was about Cabello. Later on, Carpenter performed a medley of songs from her latest album Short N' Sweet. Her set comprised of portions of "Please Please Please," "Taste," and "Espresso."

"Taste" is thought to be about Mendes and Cabello getting back together after Mendes and Carpenter had a brief fling.

Mendes and Cabello dated from 2019 to 2021. Back in 2023, Mendes and Carpenter were spotted spending much time together, though Shawn eventually denied rumors that they were dating.

This, apparently didn't go over well, as fans think Carpenter's new album Short N' Sweet, contains many songs about him — including "Coincidence," "Dumb & Poetic," and "Taste."

Before Carpenter, Mendes was linked to Camila Cabello from 2019 to 2021. In June, Cabello released her fourth album, C,XOXO which was also said to contain several songs about Mendes, including "June Gloom."

On a related note, Carpenter had a successful night at the VMAs. She took home the Song of the Year award for "Espresso."

Heartbreak is one thing, and ego's another, and Carpenter has certainly earned some bragging rights.
