John Legend has revealed he and wife Chrissy Teigen are still in contact with their surrogate.

The famous couple share four children together—daughter Luna Simone was born in April 2016, and they welcomed son Miles Theodore in May 2018. The pair suffered a pregnancy loss in 2020 with their son Jack when Teigen was 20 weeks pregnant and expanded their family twice in 2023. The model gave birth to daughter Esti Maxine in January, and son Wren Alexander arrived via surrogate five months later.

In an interview with British newspaper The Independent, the "All of Me" singer—whose real name is John Roger Stephens—opened up about their surrogacy journey.

"It's different doing it with a surrogate. We developed a really nice relationship with her—we were just really grateful," he shared. "You put your body through a lot to carry someone else's child."

When asked if they're still in touch, Legend said: "Yes, we still communicate with her."

Newsweek reached out to Legend's team via email for additional comment.

Legend and Teigen have not had an easy time expanding their family. Luna, Miles and Esti were born via IVF.

Over the years, the pair have been open about parenthood. In September 2022, Teigen clarified she did not have a miscarriage with Jack, but rather a life-saving abortion.

"Let's just call it what it was: It was an abortion," she said at the Propper Daley's "A Day of Unreasonable Conversation" summit. "An abortion to save my life for a baby that had absolutely no chance. And to be honest, I never, ever put that together until, actually, a few months ago."

In June 2023, a little over a week after Wren's birth, the Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation actress announced his arrival while sharing details about their surrogate, Alexandra.

"After losing Jack, I didn't think I'd be able to carry any more babies on my own," Teigen shared in a message posted to Instagram at the time.

"In 2021, we reached out to a surrogacy agency, with our first correspondence inquiring about perhaps having two tandem surrogates, to each bring us a healthy baby boy or girl. Twins, kinda?!"

She added that they decided to go through the IFV process "one more time" themselves to conceive Esti.

"Around the same time, we also met the most incredible, loving, compassionate surrogate we could ever imagine, Alexandra," Teigen continued. "I knew she was the perfect match for us the moment we spoke to her. All our wishes and dreams aligned. I wanted to be her friend, I wanted our children to play, I wanted dinner together, I wanted to lay my head on her belly and be able to feel the hiccups and kicks. I wanted them to be in our lives for as long as time would allow."

"We want to say thank you for this incredible gift you have given us, Alexandra. And we are so happy to tell the world he is here, with a name forever connected to you, Wren Alexander Stephens."

On September 14, Legend and Teigen celebrated their 11-year wedding anniversary.

"We have to make time for each other," Legend said of his wife to The Independent. "I love a date night. And I love a little weekend getaway too."
