Whoopi Goldberg said she is continuing to support President Joe Biden's reelection amid calls for him to withdraw from the race during a discussion on ABC's "The View."
"I don't care if he's pooped his pants. I don't care if he can't put a sentence together. Show me he can't do the job and then I'll say, okay, maybe it's time to go. Now he had a bad night the first time he went out and debated with Kamala Harris, and everyone wanted him to quit then, said, 'You can't talk to women like this. You're doing this wrong and doing that wrong. He came back and said, 'You know what I got it,' and gave four years," she said.
The Context
Biden has faced calls from some Democrats to withdraw from the presidential race following his debate performance against former President Donald Trump during the CNN Presidential Debate last month. He sounded hoarse and appeared to stumble through some answers, doing little to dispel concerns about his age among some voters.
Biden's campaign has said he had a cold the night of the debate and has sought to dispel any notion that he is not fit to run or serve a second term. Some cognitive experts have said his performance may not necessarily be indicative of decline.
What We Know
Goldberg, who has supported Democrats in the past, signaled that she will continue to support Biden on Monday.
"I don't know anyone who doesn't step in stuff at some point," she said.
Goldberg—whose real name is Caryn Elaine Johnson—added she would reconsider replacing Biden if he struggles during the second presidential debate. However, that debate is scheduled for September 10, after the Democratic National Convention, when Democrats will formally select their nominee.
"Loyalty, to me, if you are doing the job, I might not like everything you're doing. I don't like it all. But I'm going to stand behind you, like those guys stand behind the guy who should have been the person people were talking about, saying, 'Yeah, Biden had a bad day. But this guy couldn't tell the truth if it split his lip,'" Goldberg said, referring to Trump.
While some Democrats say Biden should step aside, others have been more supportive of the incumbent president, arguing that he fairly won the Democratic primary and that potential replacements have worse polling numbers against Trump.
On Monday, Biden wrote in a letter to House Democrats that he is not stepping aside.
Views
Her comments view various reactions on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Some voiced agreement with her stance that she would vote for Biden over Trump despite concerns about his age.
"Whoopi added her two cents got most of them together at the table," posted @iamchanteezy.
"She's right. If Joe Biden just sits in a rocking chair and drooled, I'd vote for him over Trump," wrote @JInMissouri.
Others, however, voiced disagreement.
"I seriously wonder what would convince Whoopi that Biden's not up for the job. If bowel incontinence and an inability to express himself wouldn't be enough—and to be clear, Whoopi has said they would not—then what would be?" posted Senator Mike Lee, a Utah Republican.
What's Next
Biden has rejected calls to step down from the presidential race. The Democratic National Convention will start on August 19, preceded by the GOP convention, which begins July 15.
