Adele had to pause her first show in Munich to take off part of her dress after the arena was hit with heavy rain.

The British singer, 36, is performing a 10-date string of gigs in the German city this month in a bespoke 80,000-capacity arena, before a planned “big break” from music.

Friday night’s show was her first gig in Europe since 2016 after a two-year residency in Las Vegas.

Videos widely circulated online show two women taking the train from Adele’s dark blue floor-length dress while the Someone Like You singer addresses the crowd.

The singer says: “Sadly I have to take this gorgeous floor train off because it’s wet and heavy.”

She adds: “At least it’s not thunder and lightning. I got a weather update so they said it wasn’t going to be raining [at the] top of the show, so I thought, ‘let me wear this dress with this enormous train on it’, like a right fa---.”

The train was visibly dripping as Adele’s two helpers carried the material off stage.

The Munich venue has an “Adele experience”, which includes a model of a London pub that Adele played at several times during her early career.

It took several hundred workers months to build and the residency is expected to contribute half a billion euros to the local economy.

Tickets for the show cost hundreds of euros, but a number of fortunate fans were able to buy them for €35 (£30) on the day of the concert owing to a lucky dip system.

The singer has previously taken long breaks from her career. She released her most recent album, 30, in November 2021, marking a comeback after five years.

The album was created in the aftermath of her divorce from Simon Konecki.

The singer has spoken in the past about her struggles with fame. She told German broadcaster ZDF: “I miss everything about before I was famous, I think probably being anonymous the most.”

Her residency in Las Vegas, at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, was attended by an audience of 4,000 for each show.

She said: “Even though it’s a very manageable size of crowd, it’s really been an emotional exchange.

“I want a big break after all this and I think I want to do other creative things just for a little while”, she told the broadcaster. “You know, I don’t even sing at home at all. How strange is that?”
