Struggling with today's Wordle? Newsweek is here to help.

Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle originally designed the game for his puzzle-loving girlfriend and then continued to perfect it during COVID-19 lockdowns.

When it was released to the public in October 2021 it became an instant hit. User numbers jumped from from 90 on November 1, 2021 to 300,000 in January 2022.

Wardle then sold the game to The New York Times for an undisclosed seven figure sum.

In a statement following the sale, Wardle said: "The game has gotten bigger than I ever imagined. I'd be lying if I said this hasn't been a little overwhelming. After all, I am just one person."

He also added that The New York Times was the ideal home for Wordle as the NYT's puzzles had played a key role in influencing the origins of the game.

Wordle is in front of the paper's paywall though users can opt to purchase a $6 per month subscription that gives access to the entire The New York Times games back catalogue.

Wordle gives players six attempts to guess a five-letter word, which changes daily. Green tiles indicate the correct letter is in the correct position and yellow tiles indicate the letter is in the word but currently in the wrong position. Gray tiles mean the letter is not in the word.

In January 2022, Wardle told Newsweek about the logic that went into designing the game.

"There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it," he said. "That might seem arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed.

"Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot. It's just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of accomplishment."

He also admitted that despite being the brains behind the game, he "is not very good" at it—usually needing up four of five goes before he gets the correct answer.
