Robert Irwin, son of the late "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, smashed his head into a tree just hours before an awards show appearance.

The TV presenter had been "catching crocodiles" in North Queensland, Australia, when he injured himself.

The 20-year-old appeared to have recovered well following the incident, attending the Sydney-based Logie Awards show alongside his I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! co-host Julia Morris, 56, soon afterwards.

He quipped that he'd needed "a big make-up job" before stepping out on the red carpet, while speaking to Dr. Chris Brown, 45, and Sonia Kruger, 58, in a video obtained by Mail Online.

According to the publication, when asked if was excited to be staying up so late, Irwin told them: "I just came straight in from catching crocodiles up north."

It was then that the star detailed his brush with death: "I just got my head smashed into a tree.

"I was on a croc's head, it was a big make-up job but I'm here, I'm excited and we are pumped and I get to do it with one of my best mates, which is awesome."

Irwin did not go into further detail about his injuries but appeared in good spirits as he kept his six million Instagram followers up to date.

"From croc country to the Logies red carpet! @godwincharli. Make-up @kristyenglishhairandmakeup. Styling @meg_durham," he had shared alongside a video of himself covered in mud and a crocodile just in view.

His sister Bindi, 26, was one of the first to reply, telling him: "The best! The entire croc trip team is cheering for you back here on the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. We can't wait! Super proud of you!"

Irwin had said it had been a "night to remember" despite missing out on the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television.

He had been tipped as a favorite to take home the gong, while also being nominated for the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter.

The two categories were scooped by Larry Emdur, 59, the latter for his role in The Chase Australia and The Morning Show.

His show I'm A Celebrity also missed out on Best Competition Reality Program, with MasterChef Australia taking the crown.

Irwin began fronting the Network 10 show with Morris in March, taking over from Brown, with the season seeing Skye Wheatley triumph.
