Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer has praised Kamala Harris' family for doing a "wonderful job" at the Democratic National Convention in a message sent to the vice president's stepdaughter.

Model Ella Emhoff, the 25-year-old daughter of Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, and film producer Kerstin Emhoff, has been seen cheering her family on at the high-profile Chicago event as her stepmother ramps up her run for president. She and her elder brother Cole Emhoff, 29, are said to refer to Harris as "Momala."

Ella Emhoff became a talking point on social media when video footage showed her reacting emotionally to second gentleman Doug Emhoff's speech at the DNC, where he talked about his love for Harris and how proud of her he is.

"I love you so much," he said during his speech at the Chicago event. "I'm so proud of how you've stepped up for us. But that's who she is. Wherever she's needed, however she's needed, Kamala rises to the occasion."

As the speech came to an end and Doug Emhoff exited the stage, video footage showed Ella Emhoff looking at her father from the audience adoringly as she clutched her chest, before embracing her mother and grandmother, Barbara Emhoff. At one stage she raised a "Doug" placard in appreciation.

Ella Emhoff took to Instagram on Wednesday to share photos and footage from the night in question, as she wrote that "if you saw me cry on tv NO YOU DIDNT."

"Just kidding," she continued. "I was crying like a little baby. Very emotional sister and daughter over here. Proud doesn't even begin to describe how I'm feeling after last night."

Spencer, who is one of a number of celebrities to have attended this week's convention, joined the flood of comments in reaction to the post. "You guys did a wonderful job introducing all of us to your family," she wrote. "Kamala and Doug give us all hope!"

Harris entered the race for the White House in July, after President Joe Biden announced that he would not be seeking reelection. She is making progress in the polls ahead of her election showdown with former President Donald Trump.

Hidden Figures star Spencer attended a fundraiser for Harris in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in June. She also attended and spoke at a Michigan rally on July 12 for the Democratic ticket, several days before Biden stepped down from his campaign.

"Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have delivered," Spencer said at the time. "They've rebuilt a battered economy and brought manufacturing back to our shores. And listen up, ladies: they're fighting each and every day for our fundamental right to make our own decisions about our own bodies."

With November's Election Day drawing closer, Spencer urged attendees to pursue an ultimate goal: "Reject Donald Trump once and for all."

"Americans have a choice to make," she went on. "Who do we trust to fight for us? Do we trust a leader who has kept his promises and fought every day to make life better for all of us? Or do we trust a convicted felon?"
