Chappell Roan's post about making her debut at the MTV Music Video Awards has raised eyebrows amongst her fans.
The singer, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame in 2024, shared a glimpse of her costume for this year's VMAs on September 11.
Roan took to her Instagram stories where she posed in a frilly black sombrero-style top and matching shorts, a black cone hat, and powdery white makeup. The star also held two gold sticks in the photo while Bhad Bhabie's song, "Hi B***."
"I am in @vmas rehearsals guys," Roan captioned the post.
Along with performing, Roan is up for multiple awards on the night including Best New Artist, Performance of the Year, Best Trending Video and Song of Summer.
Before Roan's post on Instagram, MTV had already announced her performance at the VMAs on August 12.
"Trailblazing breakout star Chappell Roan will make her first ever award show LIVE on the "VMAs" stage in the midst of a record-breaking year that includes her first-ever Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 with "Good Luck, Babe!," her critically-acclaimed album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and setting all-time attendance records at Lollapalooza and Governor's Ball earlier this summer," MTV said in a press release at the time.
Roan's attendance at the VMAs comes after a string of cancelled shows and a viral video to fans where she slammed some of them for expecting an interaction with her just because they demanded one.
"I don't give a f*** if you think it's selfish of me to say no for a photo or for your time or for a hug. That's not normal, that's weird!" she stated in a video posted to TikTok in August.
But some fans became angered when they noticed some of her cancelled shows in Europe coincided with dates leading up to the VMAs. She was meant to perform in Paris and Amsterdam on September 3 and 4 respectively, with some hypothesizing she would be using the time instead to rehearse for the VMAs.
Newsweek contacted Roan's representatives and MTV by email for comment.
"Due to scheduling conflicts, I have had to make the extremely hard decision to cancel my Paris and Amsterdam shows. I have rescheduled my Berlin show to 23 September. I am so sorry & very disappointed :( I promise I will be back. I'm heartbroken [broken heart emoji] thank you for understanding," she wrote on X, formerly Twitter on August 29.
Fans were not happy, with one writing: "She really choose the VMAS over her fans but i thought she hated fame?? ðŸ˜ðŸ’€."
Another, @poppydisagrees, wrote, "Respectfully, Chappell - if you hate fame so much, maybe you shouldn't be playing shows like Lollapalooza and the VMAs. If you just want to make music and have people resonate with it, stick to the shows you booked for true fans who got tickets BEFORE you became famous."
Some others defended Roan saying making her awards show debut at an event like the VMAs was an opportunity too good to pass up.
"My hot take is that Chappell Roan performing at the VMAs vs a 500 person concert in Paris, an opportunity I guarantee she did not have even 3 months ago, is a switch up that was probably out of her hands and also one she should ABSOLUTELY take," wrote @LissaJoStewart.
"it's pretty common for artists to cancel their shows in anticipation of award show performances. chappell isn't the first and she certainly won't be the last. a lot of y'all are just jumping the bandwagon and hating just to hate. leave her alone," commented @arianaunext.
