Martha Stewart is not having criticism of her decorating skills.
Stewart, 82, clapped back at negative commenters who called the newly decorated living room inside of her Maine home "bland." She had initially been excited about the quick renovation, sharing a carousel of photos on Instagram to show off her "big day rearranging the furniture." However, the star was quite taken aback by all of the judgment in her comments.
"I rarely read all the comments," the TV personality began, alongside a reposting of one of the pictures of her living room. Stewart noted that she had only checked on those because she was "so happy" with the transformation. Once she did go through the comments, she was "surprised at the harsh judgment so many displayed !!!"
The images showed a large living room outfitted with shades of "pale buttery yellow" with a cream-colored rug covering a hardwood floor. At the center of the space was a neutral-toned couch, off-white leather chairs, and an ornate coffee table. A large black bench with off-white cushions finished off the seating plan. On the back wall, surrounding a wood-paneled fireplace, hung a collection of Carroll Tyson chromo lithographs of birds.
One Instagram user commented, "Doesn't look homey and inviting. Looks more like a furniture showroom than a home. Sad to see." Another said, "Lovely but bland," advising, "Add some color for joy and fun." Some criticized the furniture, saying, "It doesn't look like there is 1 comfortable chair." Stewart, however, was proud of the "three hours" she and her helpers spent removing the old furniture and bringing in the new.
"We were pleased that the pieces actually fit the room and were proportionate to the large size of the space," she wrote, explaining that it "was not a 'decorator's' professional installation. It was an attempt to change quickly and efficiently Making a house a home." Stewart shared that it takes a lot longer to completely refurbish a room. "Of course there will be color, plants, mirrors, a new rug or two and other art and objects," the Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia founder added, advising fans to "Stay tuned!!!!"
There were commenters who came to Stewart's defense as well. One Instagram user posted, "Absolutely beautiful Martha !! ❤️," while another gushed, "I like it. The black bench is fab. The rest feels very lodg-y, which agrees with the period of the house (at least in my mind 😊). Lots of comfort!" One loved the design so much, they commented, "You should publish a coffee table book dedicated to showcasing all your incredible homes! 🏡."
