Actress Meryl Streep found herself at the center of an unexpected yet playful joke at the 2024 Emmy Awards last night.

Presenters Kaitlin Olson and Rob McElhenney, stars of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, took the stage at the award show on Sunday, September 15 to present the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Streep, 75, was among the nominees for this category and received quite the shoutout from the duo, who are actually a married couple.

McElhenney, 47, kicked off the presentation with a take on the importance of supporting roles in comedy. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to honor the comedic performances that hold everything in place," he said. Olson, 49, chimed in with a cheeky analogy, "Much like a jock strap. What you were describing sounds very much like a jock strap."

The Mythic Quest actor played along, pretending to be puzzled before admitting, "Alright, this does sound like a jock strap," drawing laughter from the audience. Olson then sarcastically asked if they were comparing the three-time Oscar winner to a jock strap, prompting McElhenney to hurriedly deny it. The camera then cut to Streep, who appeared visibly stunned and mouthed, "My god," before looking down. Despite the light-hearted jab, the legendary actress handled the moment gracefully, and McElhenney quickly apologized, saying, "I'm so sorry, Meryl."

Video of the moment made its way around the internet, prompting mixed responses from fans. "Meryl Streep's face w the jock strap joke," said one user on X (formerly known as Twitter), while another noted, "OMG, Meryl Streep handling that jockstrap joke at the Emmys with pure class is literally everything!" A third fan posted, "insulting night for meryl streep got called a jock strap then lost best supporting actress in a comedy series..ouch insult to injury 😬."

Although Streep did not win the award, which went to Liza Colón-Zayas of The Bear, she seemed to enjoy the rest of the evening. The three-time Emmy winner was seen seated front row next to her Only Murders in the Building co-star Martin Short, with whom she was captured in a lively conversation. The co-stars have been the subject of romance rumors, and were seen holding hands at the show's fourth season premiere back in August, but have denied any romantic involvement off-screen.

Short was married to Nancy Dolman until her death in 2010, while Streep has been separated from her husband, Don Gummer, since 2017.
