Jenna Ortega and Johnny Depp share a history of collaboration with director Tim Burton – but Ortega wants the world to know that they're not sharing anything more than that.
During an interview with BuzzFeed Celeb while promoting her new movie Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the 21-year-old actress said that the craziest rumor she'd heard about herself was that she was "in a serious relationship with" the 61-year-old screen veteran. "It's so insane to me. I never spoke on that, I never said anything like that," the Wednesday star said.
Apparently, celebrity gossip site DeuxMoi circulated the idea that Ortega and Depp would both be in the sequel to Beetlejuice and had started dating on set. While this turned out to be true for Ortega –– who plays the daughter of Winona Rider's character from the original film –– Depp is not involved in the project at all. Still, the rumor gained traction, much to Ortega's shock. "Articles really do just make up their own quotes," she said, alluding to the baselessness of the story, "but I thought that was pretty hilarious."
Apparently even Ortega's co-star, Richard E. Grant, was fooled by the rumors, and approached her during filming for their upcoming movie Death Of A Unicorne. "So, you and Johnny?" the 67-year-old actor apparently asked her. "I laughed, because I don't know that person," Ortega told BuzzFeed.
Depp has acted in eight Burton-directed films, while Ortega has already starred in Burton's Addams' Family spin-off series, Wednesday and the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel. A representative from Depp's team vigorously denied the relationship in a statement given to NME in August of 2023. "Mr. Depp has no personal or professional relationship with Ms. Ortega whatsoever. He has never met her or spoken to her. He is not involved in any project with her, nor does he intend to be. He is appalled by these baseless and malicious rumors that are intended to harm his reputation and career."
