Winona Ryder has detailed an awkward interview moment while sharing a key piece of advice she received from former co-star Daniel Day-Lewis.

The actress accidentally heard exactly what an interviewer thought of her moments after their chat, in which she'd spoken openly about "life and history."

The 52-year-old said "a lot of people" find her "weird" as she spoke to Josh Horowitz in Monday's installment of the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Ryder laughed as she recalled overhearing the undisclosed host question what she had been discussing after seemingly leaving his microphone on.

As the talk turned to anxiety 24 minutes into the 46 minute-long chat, the Beetlejuice star reflected on how getting the "best advice" from Day-Lewis during the press junket for 1993's Age Of Innocence has had an impact on how she conducts interviews.

She said: "We were both going through stuff at the time and he's like, 'Just keep talking so they can't ask you... Just ramble'."

It came after Horowitz asked how she "switches off" when the cameras aren't rolling, which led Ryder to joke about the reaction she sparks.

She continued: "When I get comfortable I like to, you know, I think it could be because I spent so much time not getting to do that and I still do. I mean nobody knows what the f*** I'm talking about.

"A lot of people [are] like, 'She's so weird, like she won't stop doing... what the hell'."

It was then Ryder spoke of overhearing what one particular interviewer thought.

Without disclosing who it was, she remembered: "I was doing an interview with a guy and he thought he'd turned his thing off and I heard him like, 'Jesus Christ, what was she talking about?'

"I was like, 'Oh I thought...' We were talking about life and the history and stuff, but it's funny because I always go back to what Daniel said."

Ryder has been open in the past about being "supersensitive," saying: "I don't think that that's a bad thing."

She added to The Cut in 2016: "To do what I do, I have to remain open... I remember I did Diane Sawyer, and I talked about my experiences with anxiety and depression when I was that age.

"And I think by doing that, maybe coupled with my physical size, there's this 'crazy' thing. And I've realized recently it's literally impossible to try to change that story."

During the new, aforementioned recording, Ryder was promoting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a sequel to the 1988 movie, set to be released on Friday.

The film star is reprising her role as Lydia Deetz alongside Michael Keaton and Catherine O'Hara. Deetz is now mother to a teen daughter.
